What is Tinplate Temper Chart

Definition

Tinplate temper chart is a crucial tool used in the metal packaging industry to determine the temper of tinplate, which is a thin sheet of steel coated with tin to prevent corrosion. The temper of tinplate refers to its hardness and flexibility, with different tempers suitable for different types of packaging applications. Understanding the tinplate temper chart is essential for manufacturers, as it helps them select the appropriate tinplate for their specific production needs.

The tinplate temper chart typically categorizes tinplate into various temper levels, such as T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5. Each temper level has its own unique properties in terms of hardness and flexibility, with T1 being the softest and most flexible, and T5 being the hardest and least flexible. Manufacturers can consult the chart to determine which temper level is best suited for their packaging requirements, based on factors such as the required strength of the packaging material and the intended use of the product.

Tinplate Temper Chart List

Different applications of tinplate require different degree of hardness for the base material. The desired hardness is established in the temper rolling mill/double cold rolling mill. The standard temper grades are designated according to the Rockwell Hardness Test. The doubly reduced (DR) temper is produced to obtain extremely high yield strength tinplate. Such tinplate enables the can-maker to produce thinner gauge and lighter cans, without compromising strength.

In addition to hardness and flexibility, the tinplate temper chart also provides information on other important properties of tinplate, such as its resistance to corrosion, formability, and weldability. These properties play a crucial role in determining the overall quality and performance of the tinplate in various packaging applications. Manufacturers can use the information provided in the chart to make informed decisions about the type of tinplate to use for their specific production needs, ensuring that they achieve the desired results in terms of product quality and efficiency.

Furthermore, the tinplate temper chart helps manufacturers understand the heat treatment and annealing processes required to achieve the desired temper level in the tinplate. These processes involve heating the tinplate to a certain temperature and then cooling it at a controlled rate to achieve the desired hardness and flexibility. By following the guidelines provided in the chart, manufacturers can ensure that the tinplate is properly treated to meet their specific production requirements, resulting in high-quality packaging materials that meet industry standards.
